About Us
Paper Cuts Australia exists to make the invisible visible.
Across disability, aged care and veterans’ systems, decisions made on paper have very real consequences.
A funding cut. A support refused. An assessment that bears little resemblance to someone's actual life. Months or years spent fighting a decision. Families expected to quietly fill the gaps. People left without the care, support or services they need.
Individually, these experiences are too often treated as isolated cases. Administrative problems. Unfortunate outcomes. Just another complaint.
But when we put those stories together, a very different picture emerges.
The human cost of cuts
Paper Cuts Australia is an independent, volunteer-run project documenting the human impact of decisions across Australia's disability, aged care and veterans’ systems.
We collect stories from the people experiencing these systems firsthand, including disabled people, older Australians, veterans, families, carers and the people supporting them.
Because behind every statistic, budget saving, policy change and administrative decision is a person.
And those stories matter.
Why Paper Cuts?
A paper cut seems small.
So does one funding reduction. One rejected application. One service withdrawn. One assessment ignored. One bureaucratic delay.
But cuts accumulate.
When the same things keep happening to people across different systems, they stop being isolated incidents. They become patterns.
Paper Cuts Australia exists to make those patterns visible.
By bringing people's experiences together, we want to build a public record of what is happening on the ground and show the real-world consequences that don't always appear in government reports, budgets or headline figures.
What we do
We document lived experiences and identify recurring patterns of harm across disability, aged care and veterans’ systems.
We aim to turn individual stories into collective evidence that can help inform public discussion, advocacy, research, journalism and policy.
This isn't about reducing people's lives to data.
It's about making sure the data can no longer erase the people.
What we stand for
We believe systems designed to support people should be accountable to the people who rely on them.
We believe lived experience is evidence.
We believe cost savings should never be discussed without also accounting for the human cost.
And we believe people shouldn't have to fight these systems alone, then disappear into a filing cabinet when the fight is over.
There is enormous power in being able to say:
This didn't just happen to me.
Who runs Paper Cuts Australia?
Paper Cuts Australia is run entirely by volunteers.
We are independent and committed to documenting people's experiences carefully, respectfully and responsibly.
We don't pretend to speak for the communities represented here. Our job is to create somewhere their experiences can be recorded, connected and made harder to ignore.
Disability. Aged Care. Veterans.
Making the invisible visible.
The human cost of cuts.
